Résumé Atopic dermatitis is inflammatory skin disease mainly characterized by pruritus. It is a quite common disease in dogs and a complex multifactorial disease.

Genetic factors
The precise mode of transmission of AD is not know. The genetic expression is dependent of unknown factors.
Role of the (specific) antibodies and allergens
The disease is IgE mediated. Two types of allergens are considered: seasonal and non seasonal allergens.
Immune dysregulation: role of the cellular immunity and cytokines
The simplistic mechanism can be summarized in an cellular response where the lymphocytes T helper2 dominated immune response, then inducing a specific production of cytokines in the skin.
Role of the inflammatory mediators in the skin
In response to the immune stimulation, inflammatory mediators are produced: Histamine, Serotonine, Leukotrienes,Cytokines
Role of the Stratum Corneum barrier
Some defects in the skin barrier are suspected: lipid metabolic defects (ceramides), architectural cell abnormalities…
Abnormalities in the itching neurological pathways
Works on the IL31 demonstrated the interest of this cytokine inhibition (JAK receptors inhibitors : oclacitinib).
The diagnosis of CAD is clinical (with work up to rule out other pruritic non allergenic dermatitis).
The more interesting tool available for the CAD diagnosis is the Favrot criteria.
Some specific clinical pattern are observed depending on the breeds.
Treatment of CAD includes a combination of managements:
Allergens avoidance, Antimicrobial therapy, Anti-allergic drug, Anti-prurit drug, Allergen-specific immunotherapy

In this course you can learn more about canine atopic dermatitis in all its aspects. You will learn how to recognize and how to manage CAD. New existing treatments will be explained to help you in your daily practice!
